Amid rising concerns over the proposed multipurpose hydroelectric-cum-irrigation project at Ukiam on the Kulsi River near the Assam-Meghalaya border, the Assam government has issued a formal clarification to ease public anxiety.
The project, planned in Assam’s Kamrup district, has triggered fears about possible ecological damage, displacement of residents, and adverse effects on agriculture. Responding to these issues, the state government clarified that no final decision has been made regarding the project’s implementation.
It further noted that the area’s jurisdiction is still under discussion with the Meghalaya government. Both states will hold structured consultations involving all stakeholders, including representatives from local communities, before taking any further steps.
In a statement released on July 18, the Assam government assured that the interests and well-being of affected communities would be protected, and any decisions will be made transparently and inclusively.
This assurance follows growing demands from civil society and environmental groups, urging the government to prioritize sustainability and community involvement in major infrastructure projects.
