The youth-oriented Mara festival, “O-Dôh Ku” was celebrated today at New Siaha Multipurpose Hall. The event was organised by Akashvani CRS Siaha and drew participation from various community groups.
Mara Autonomous District Council (MADC), Deputy Chief Executive Member ( Dy CEM) Pu S. Lalremthanga, attended the programme as Chief Guest. In his address, he expressed delight at the revival of one of the Mara community’s most significant festivals. He remarked that in an increasingly developing world, it is essential to preserve the traditions and cultural heritage passed down by ancestors. He emphasised the importance of valuing and safeguarding one’s own culture and traditions.
Pu S. Lalremthanga also spoke about initiatives to incorporate awareness of Mara culture and traditions into schools across the MADC area. He underlined the need for young people to gain an understanding of their cultural roots from an early age.
Guest of Honour, Pu DR Lalropuia, Director and Cluster Head of Akashvani Mizoram, highlighted the significance of cultural preservation in modern times. He noted the substantial contribution made by Akashvani CRS towards safeguarding local traditions. Despite rapid advances in information technology, he said, radio continues to play a vital role. Beyond disseminating important information, it remains a valuable source of entertainment, particularly in music. He further added that radio serves as an educational tool, helping listeners learn proper pronunciation and usage of language.
The celebration featured a vibrant cultural programme, with various branches of Mara Thyutlia Py (MTP) presenting traditional dances.
“O-Dôh Ku” is one of several festivals observed by the Mara community. Primarily a youth festival, it is celebrated ahead of Lyuva Khutla and serves as a platform to showcase Mara culture through traditional songs and dances.
