A tragic incident occurred on Sunday, July 20, in Sairang village, around 21 kilometers from Aizawl, the capital of Mizoram, when a stone quarry collapsed, claiming the life of a local resident. Police confirmed that the continuous rainfall in the area had weakened the quarry, ultimately causing a section to give way and send debris crashing down onto a nearby house.
The victim, identified as Rotluanga, was inside the house when the collapse occurred and was buried under the rubble. Emergency teams promptly launched a rescue operation, and his body was recovered from the debris later that day. Officials believe the incident was caused by soil erosion and instability due to persistent heavy rains in the region.
The tragedy has sparked growing concern over the safety of homes situated close to quarrying areas, especially during the monsoon months when the risk of landslides increases. Authorities have initiated an investigation to examine the structural integrity of nearby quarries and explore the implementation of improved safety and preventive measures to avoid future incidents.
