The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) is the “main pillar of India’s Act East Policy,” according to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who also welcomed Timor-Leste, which was formally inducted as the group’s eleventh member during its current summit in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. At the 22nd ASEAN-India Summit, Prime Minister Modi made the following statement virtually: “India and ASEAN together represent one-fourth of the global population.” We have strong historical ties, similar values, and a similar geography. Our region is in the global south. The Act East Policy of India is based primarily on ASEAN.

The Look East program, which was first implemented in 1992, was mainly concerned with developing commercial relations with Southeast Asia. In response to the shifting global landscape, Prime Minister Modi revitalized India’s foreign policy in 2014 by transforming the Look East Policy into the more dynamic Act East Policy (AEP), which placed a greater premium on action and results. Speaking during the ASEAN summit, PM Modi offered his sympathies on the loss of Thailand’s Queen Mother and thanked Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim on organizing the 47th ASEAN meeting under its presidency.

India’s Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, welcomed Timor-Leste as the 11th member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), marking the first expansion in 26 years since Cambodia’s admission in 1999. Modi congratulated PM Anwar Ibrahim for organizing the ASEAN Summit and emphasized the shared historical, cultural, and economic ties between India and ASEAN nations. He also emphasized the importance of the India-ASEAN Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in global stability and development.
