NEW DELHI: Byrnihat and 52 other cities in the nation that saw a decline in air quality have been ordered by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) to submit a comprehensive report outlining the role played by each polluting source and the steps taken to minimize pollution.
The Central Pollution Control Board’s Air Quality Index (AQI), which shows how the quality of the air is declining in various Indian cities, was brought before the tribunal.
The tribunal declared on December 5 that the states had not made full use of the monies they had been awarded under the 15th Finance Commission and the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP) after reviewing the reports that they had filed.
It had also requested a follow-up action report from the affected states.
Further reports were filed by the Union Ministry of Environment, Forests, and Climate Change (MoEF&CC), Delhi, Meghalaya, Punjab, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, and Haryana, according to a bench chaired by Justice Prakash Shrivastava, the chairperson of the NGT.
In addition, the tribunal stated that a “complete report” must be submitted at least one week prior to the next hearing date on May 3. “All the cities (53) should disclose the contribution by each polluting source in terms of identified pollutant as per source apportionment and progressive reduction on account of measures taken,” the tribunal stated.
