President Droupadi Murmu led the Indian delegation to Vatican City for the State Funeral of Pope Francis. Accompanied by Union Minister for Parliamentary Affairs and Minority Affairs, Shri Kiren Rijiju, Minister of State for Minority Affairs, Shri George Kurian, and Deputy Speaker of the Goa Legislative Assembly, Shri Joshua De Souza, President Murmu arrived in Rome on April 25 to participate in the funeral on April 26.
Pope Francis, who passed away on April 21, 2025, has left behind a legacy of compassion and peace, leading to widespread mourning across the globe. In response, India declared three days of State Mourning. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep condolences, remembering the late Pope’s warm relationship with the people of India. The event has also sparked increased demand for religious goods.
