Search operation continue to local landslide victims

Even more than two weeks have passed since a massive landslide hit Melthum on the southern outskirts of Aizawl, search operation to locate the missing three persons is still on.

Leaders of Young Mizo Association (YMA) from Melthum locality said that the search operation is still carried out by local volunteers.

They said that the search operation is sometimes affected by community service to clear inter-locality roads, which are disrupted by landslides.

According to Melthum YMA leaders, three persons, including a six-month-old baby and an eight-year-old girl, have been missing since the landslide occurred on May 28.

One more person from Aibawl is still missing since his house was swept away by a landslide on May 28.

At least 30 people have been killed in multiple landslides across seven localities and villages in Mizoram capital region Aizawl.
The landslides occured on May 28 sweeping several houses.

At least 16 people have died when several houses and worker camps caved in due to the impact of a massive landslide at an abandoned stone quarry in the border area of Melthum and Hlimen.

In Hlimen, six people died when a landslide swept away two houses and another three died at Aizawl’s Salem veng locality due to a landslide.

2 persons died due to a landslide at Falkawn village about 15 km from Aizawl and one each died in Kelsih, Lungsei and Aibawk villages in Aizawl district.
