In a collaborative effort to enhance livelihood opportunities through renewable energy solutions in Mizoram, the Social Welfare and Tribal Affairs Department of Mizoram and SELCO Foundation (SF) convened at Aijal Club for discussions. Dr. Lalhriatzuali Ralte, IAS, Director of Social Welfare and Tribal Affairs, emphasized the potential of Decentralized Renewable Energy (DRE) solutions to augment employment opportunities within existing departmental frameworks. She expressed her eagerness to collaborate with SELCO in advancing solar energy initiatives and establishing training centers.
Highlighting ongoing efforts, Ralte noted the operational Tribal Research Institute (TRI) at Kelsih under the Directorate, underscoring the government’s commitment to initiatives like ‘Mission Chhanchhuahna’ in Phunchawng and Rangvamual. Plans for the development of Smart Tribal Villages are also in progress. Lalnuntluanga Colney, State Lead at SELCO Foundation, stressed the importance of a sustainable, renewable-driven approach in combating unemployment and addressing climate change in the state. Usma Chakma, Project Manager at SELCO Foundation, cited successful collaborative initiatives with NGOs and government departments across Mizoram.
Established in January 2023 in Mizoram, SELCO Foundation envisions leveraging renewable energy, particularly solar power, to stimulate agriculture, livestock, and small businesses, thereby alleviating employment challenges statewide.
