Several houses, including church buildings, have been damaged as hailstorm and heavy rain lashed different parts of Mizoram on monday morning and Sunday night, officials said. No human casualties have been reported, they said. More than 300 houses were damaged by hail at Zohmun and Palsang villages in Aizawl district in the northeastern part of the state bordering Manipur on Sunday night, officials said.
In Zohmun, at least 278 houses were damaged, of which about 250 were fully damaged, while around 55 houses have also been damaged at Palsang village when heavy rain and hailstorm hit the two villages and surrounding villages around 12 am on the intervening night of Sunday and Monday. A church building belonging to United Pentecostal Church (UPC) at Lungtan village in east Mizoram’s Champhai district collapsed and another church building at Sialsuk in Aizawl district was also damaged by a storm accompanied by heavy rain on Sunday morning, officials said.
A pandal, which is being constructed at East Lungdar village in Serchhip district, to host the general conference of middle-aged men wing(pavalai pawl) of Presbyterian church between April 12 and April 14, has also been completely damaged by a storm on Sunday morning, they said. Besides, an Assam-type building in Champhai’s Rahsi locality and several houses at Baktawng village in Aizawl district were either fully or partly damaged.
Detailed reports of damages caused by rain, storm and hail are yet to be known as district officials rushed to respective villages on Monday to verify the damages, officials said.
