The Mizoram Governor has extended the Governor’s Rule in the Chakma Autonomous District Council (CADC) for an additional six months due to ongoing political uncertainty and administrative concerns. This decision follows a notification from the District Council and Minority Affairs Department, which noted that the Governor originally assumed all functions and powers of the CADC on July 7, 2025, for a six-month term, which has now been renewed under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution.
The notification also highlighted that following the previous term, Lakkhan Chakma claimed the position of the third Chief Executive Member of the 11th CADC. According to Para 20BB of the Sixth Schedule, the Governor sought the opinion of the Council of Ministers regarding this claim but decided to extend the Governor’s Rule due to frequent changes in allegiance among the elected members and an ongoing Inquiry Commission report.
Using the authority conferred by Para 16(2) in conjunction with Para 20BB of the Sixth Schedule, the Governor has continued the rule until further notice. The Deputy Commissioner of Lawngtlai district will exercise all functions and powers on the Governor’s behalf, effective from January 7, 2026. The order was issued by Lalhmunsanga Hnamte, Secretary to the Government of Mizoram, District Council and Minority Affairs Department.
