Nikhil Chaudhary’s 163 for Tasmania against New South Wales in Sydney became him the first Indian player to score a Sheffield Shield century this century. Chaudhary hit five sixes in his 184-ball knock. Along with Tim Ward and Caleb Jewell, he was one of Tasmania’s three centurions as the team amassed 623 for eight in its innings. Born in Delhi, Chaudhary represented Punjab in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and Vijay Hazare Trophy before relocating to Australia in 2020. He is still an Indian citizen, but he is now a permanent resident of the nation.
After being observed playing club cricket, he was first chosen into the Hobart Hurricanes’ Big Bash League (BBL) squad. Last summer, he moved to Tasmania. His first First-Class century came against New South Wales. A few Indians, including former India international Rusi Surti, who struck a century and completed a hat trick for Queensland in the 1970s, have participated in the Sheffield Shield, including Chaudhary.
