According to officials, Aizawl would be the fourth capital in the northeast to be connected to India’s railway system in the next five months. The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) is overseeing the 51.38-kilometer Bairabi-Sairang broad gauge railway line, which is almost finished. Aizawl, Guwahati, Agartala, and Naharlagun would be added to the list of northeastern capitals having railway connectivity as a result of the project, which is valued at over Rs. 8,210 crore.

The project’s development was confirmed by NFR’s Chief Public Relations Officer, Kapinjal Kishore Sharma, who also highlighted the recent inspection conducted by NFR General Manager (Construction), Arun Kumar Chaudhary. The building of the Kawnpui and Mualkhang stations, the Sairang station yard, and the substantial bridge and tunnel infrastructure along the route were among the important sites Chaudhary and senior officials visited to inspect the continuing work. Four sections make up the railway line: Mualkhang-Sairang, Kawnpui-Mualkhang, Hortoki-Kawnpui, and Bairabi-Hortoki.

While work is being done to finish the remaining portions as soon as possible, the Bairabi-Hortoki section went into service in July 2024. Chaudhary also conducted a window-trailing inspection from Sabroom to Agartala to examine railway operations in Tripura during his visit. The Sabroom station, which is close to the Bangladeshi border, is essential to the region’s increased trade and logistics. In order to discuss ongoing infrastructure projects that will enhance connectivity and economic prospects, he also met with Manik Saha, the chief minister of Tripura.
