To protect migratory birds Mizo govt ban on hunting birds

To safeguard migratory animals, the Mizoram government has issued a temporary ban on hunting birds and other wildlife in October and November. Aizawl District Magistrate Lalhriatpuia made the decision on Monday. It prohibits the use of catapults, guns, and air rifles for hunting in an effort to protect the region’s animals during this vital time. Section 163 was used to enact this harsh restriction. The goal of this measure is to protect migrating species such as the Amur Falcon. The Amur Falcon, also known as Sialsir, migrates from the cooler northern hemisphere to southern Africa, stopping in Mizoram for a respite.

Hunting during these months puts many of these species in danger of extinction. The Mizoram district administration, in partnership with local conservation groups like as CESJ, is working to raise awareness about the need of protecting these species. The CESJ encouraged district officials and local communities to safeguard migrating birds as they passed through Mizoram. Those who violate the order could face fines under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita 2023.
