Tougher Measures Ahead as Mizoram Steps Up Action Against Areca Nut Smugglers

Estimated read time 1 min read

The Mizoram government is intensifying efforts to combat the smuggling of areca nuts from Myanmar, as announced by Home Minister K Sapdanga during an assembly session. The surge of illegal imports over recent years has significantly harmed local farmers economically and fueled the growth of unregulated “black money” in the region. Official reports from 2019 to 2025 indicate that a total of 468 smuggling cases have been recorded, resulting in the arrest of 292 individuals in this timeframe.

Sapdanga highlighted that these illegally imported areca nuts evade mandatory tariffs, violating the Customs Act. The untaxed status of these goods allows them to be sold at prices lower than those of locally produced areca nuts, thereby undermining the livelihoods of legitimate growers. He reaffirmed a strict “zero-tolerance” stance on the issue, emphasizing the government’s resolve to maintain the ban on smuggling and enhance border patrol efforts. Additionally, he noted that anyone involved in this illicit trade, including potential actions against government officials, would face severe consequences, identifying past instances of political and police involvement in smuggling activities.
