The people of Mizoram state capital Aizawl city are facing huge shortage of water supply with each city dweller receiving less than half of his or her daily water requirement, state Public Health Engineer Minister Prof. Lalnilawma informed the state assembly on Friday. Replying to a query from V.L. Zaithanzama of the ruling Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM), Lalnilawma said that the population of Aizawl city is estimated at 3,78,500 at present.
“The population of the city requires 66.42 million litre per day (MLD) as per the Guidelines of the Central Public Health and Environmental Engineering Organisation (CPHEEO) which is 135 Litre Per Capita Per Day (LPCD),” the minister said. He said that at present the Greater Aizawl Water Supply Scheme Phase-1 and Phase-2 manage to pump and provide barely 28.77 million litre in a day.
“If power supply can be provided within February pumping of water from the Greater Aizawl Water Supply Scheme Phase – 3 is expected to be commissioned by March this year,” he said. He expressed the hope that this will be able to provide better water supply to the citizens of the capital city.
